About a month ago I described the book “I Could do Anything: if only I knew what it was” by Barbara Sher. I have always felt lost and unsure about what I should be doing with my life, and it has definitely given me some clarity.

One of the first chapters makes a very good point about how many people feel lost in choosing a career, because their own goals are compared internally to family expectations, as well as a host of other expectations that we create for ourselves growing up. Barbara Sher points out that these combined expectations are often contradictory and impossible to satisfy.

I did not experience any “Eureka” moment, but I can say that I do feel a lot more confident about where I am headed now in my life. It is so refreshing not to be questioning myself day in and day out about why I have not found my passion or goal… what I am “supposed” to be doing. It has always been a huge point of frustration for me, and is nice to feel a little bit calmer about everything- even if my plans do end up changing later on.

Barbara Sher says that taking action – any kind of action – will help propel you in the right direction, because it is a great way of learning what we like/do not like and meeting great contacts.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone like me who feels “stuck” – the title of the book says it all: “I could do anything: if I only I knew what it was.”

1337 speak?

These are questions I ask myself sometimes… I have a bit of a love affair with Europe, and it would make me so happy to return to France. The six hour time difference can make it very difficult to keep in touch in loved ones, though, back in Canada. Also, is it better to stick to something you know that you love, or is it better to try a new flavour? Making choices can be so difficult sometimes. For example, if your favourite flavour of ice cream is vanilla, then choosing rocky road is a risk in that it could be amazing, or it could be a disappointment compared to your original, familiar choice. When is it worth taking the chance?

Maybe the solution is to take chances when feeling a bit rebellious, and do as much research as possible beforehand if you are not. To be perfectly honest, I cannot say that I have followed this decision structure… when I decided to apply for my exchange in France the only choice left was Lyon. I barely did any research beforehand, but I suppose that I did speak with friends who had lived there. Sometimes it is more fun to go with your gut feeling, and to take it from there.

Yes, it is a South Korean boy band… love it. The song is Korean, but english is thrown in here and there, too.

Helmut Fritz- Ça m’énerve

This song was really popular in the french clubs last winter. I never really knew what he was singing about until I stumbled upon the video. It is actually pretty funny; the singer recounts everything that bugs him, and he is extremely ridiculous.
