So funny!

Tonight there were some new changes implemented in TF2, which are detailed in Steam News. Although the changes themselves are minor, I foresee them having a great impact on game play .

For example, to the great grief of many pyros, the backburner will no longer be giving a health bonus. I have only heard negative comments about this particular update, but I personally felt that the pyro had been a bit too strong of a class since the last pyro update.

Also, the problem of having “grenades, rockets, and flamethrower being able to fire through grates at round starts” has been fixed. I think that will especially help the gameplay on Gold Rush. Similarly, “various exploits and performance problems in CP_Badlands, CP_Well, and CP_Fastlane” were fixed, and I’m thinking that it is mostly in regards to issues with setup.

One interesting change is the fact that players who commit suicide “will now give a kill credit to the last enemy who damaged them.” I’m curious as to whether this was done to discourage people from blowing themselves up instead of giving their killer points, or if it is because in matches, especially in Gravel Pit, a player will suicide to give the engineer metal.

New Pyro Updates

It seems like the release of the new “Meet the Sniper” video was quite strategic, as the video contained shots of the new pyro gun, though you really have to watch for it!

Will the new pyro gun and abilities greatly change the dynamics of a typical TF2 match? I am curious, and very excited to find out. Before pyros were seen as the weak character that was used mainly for griefing, but the new gun and abilities summarized below give the pyro an all-new advantage.

Summary of the updates (Valve):
* Added alt-fire compression blast to the basic flamethrower
* Added The Axtinguisher, The Backburner, and The Flare Gun
* Hadouken taunt now kills people it hits
* Tuned the flamethrower hit detection to improve detection versus retreating opponents
* Removed Flamethrower’s damage falloff (was falling off to 25% by the end)

Valve’s TF2 team clearly puts an emphasis on quality throughout the game, even with the new achievements, as they are nothing short of hilarious. My personal favourite is “OMGWTFBBQ” and my buddy Johnny aka Freezerburn was stoked to see “Freezer Burn” on the list :).

It seems like they went a bit nuts with updates yesterday ! There are also new friends icons that you can see when you’re in-game:

One of the updates that I am not crazy about is the fact that they “removed Soldier’s 40% damage reduction from his own rockets. Does not affect rocket jumps.” This will make it take longer in a typical match for a medic to reach an uber, so I guess we’ll have to rely on the demos !

AND two new maps! I scrimmed for a bit on cp_fastlane yesterday, and the colours reminded me of Dustbowl and Goldrush. I’d like to see maps with a different motif, like Well. Speaking of Well, there was a new route added to the game. I always loved Well, so I’m not really sure why it was changed, but maybe it was to make things a bit easier for snipers. The route is goes “from the forward central foyer up to the battlements.”
